Drywall Protection: 3 Considerations

by Boss Steel on August 10, 2018

All things considered, walls seem fairly sturdy. Underlaid with concrete, wood, or even steel, our walls protect us from the outside world. Covering those strong materials, however, is a layer of drywall. Drywall is not so sturdy. Made of a compound of rock and paper, drywall is composed of 70-90% gypsum, 10% cellulose, and a composite of other materials such as starch, mica, and wax.

Although sturdy in certain senses, drywall is delicate in others. When attempting to keep your drywall in good shape, you must focus on three primary considerations.

3 Considerations when Protecting Drywall

Fire

Although all drywall is flammable, there are certain steps homeowners can take to reduce risk. One of them is choosing to install 5/8-inch fire-code drywall in some (or all) areas instead of the standard 1/2-inch; however, just how helpful this may prove is a matter up for debate.

Water

Water isn't as dramatic a consideration as fire, but the consequences of water exposure can be quite damaging, both to your structure and to you. Wet drywall can become soft; moist drywall can damage insulation and lead to the development of mold; toxic molds can make you sick.

Incidental Damage

Most homeowners take steps to protect their drywall against fire and water damage; however, not everyone takes the time to invest in preventative maintenance against incidental damage. No matter how safe and careful you are, over time, damage to your drywall is almost unavoidable.

We Can Help

Though our guards won't help with fire or water damage, they'll certainly help protect against accidental scratches, scrapes, dents, and gouges. The first step toward protecting your vulnerable drywall should be to invest in sets of interior corner guards.

We carry guards in various sizes, styles, and thicknesses. To hear more about our products, or to discuss which type of guard would best suit your needs, please feel free to contact us at any time.

We look forward to hearing from you.
